US AIRWAYS DIVIDEND MILES

The US Airways Dividend Miles frequent flyer program offers domestic and international flights at reasonable mileage rates. Dividend Miles expire if an account is inactive for 18 months.

For the Infrequent Flyer, most of the value of this program comes from the US Airways Dividend MasterCard issued by Barclays which awards enough miles for two free domestic round-trip tickets after your first purchase with no annual fee for the first year.

US Airways and American Airlines are currently in the process of merging the two airlines. Eventually that should mean that you'll be able to combine your Dividend Miles with your AAdvantage Miles, but that capability probably won't emerge until at least 2014. In the meantime, I expect the Dividend Miles program will continue to operate as usual and I don't believe that the Barclays credit card offers listed below will suddenly disappear, though we are already seeing the offer terms changing with the waived annual fee options disappearing.

Earning Dividend Miles

  • Apply for a US Airways MasterCard from Barclays (see below)
  • Starwood Preferred Guest points can be transferred into Dividend Miles accounts at a ratio of 1:1 in any amount over 2,500 points (1,500 points for Gold SPG status; no minimum for Platinum SPG status). For every 20,000 points transferred, SPG will transfer an additional 5,000 Dividend Miles.
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards points may be transferred into Dividend Miles at a 1:1 ratio in 1,000 point increments if you own a Chase Sapphire or Ink credit card.
  • Points may be transferred from most hotel chains. These transfers are probably not worthwhile unless you are trying to reach a goal for your Dividend Miles or need to redeem some hotel points that might otherwise expire.
  • The Dividend Miles StoreFront allows you to earn bonus miles by shopping with specific online retailers. Be sure to check other shopping portals to make sure you are getting the best return for your spending.
  • The Dividend Miles Dining program allows you to earn miles when you link your credit card(s) and use them at specific restaurants.
  • The DMDailyDeal is a Groupon-like program that offers discounted deals every day. You will earn 5 miles per $1 spent on these promotions.
  • The US Airways website promotes various other ways to accumulate Dividend Miles.
